Abstract
In Berg’s musical drama, the military attendant Wozzeck kills his lover Marie after discovering that she betrayed him. Then he commits suicide, leaving their only son orphaned. Loss as a mournful catastrophe is masterfully prepared, in both Büchner’s hypotext and Berg’s recoding, through some narratologically relevant solutions: mainly the treatment of diegetic temporality which in the mimetic structure is assumed as a strategy of repetition. Through a series of devices that ‘figurally’ anticipate the outcome of the plot, Wozzeck’s storyworld seems to be ruled by a class predestination per se problematic from an ideological point of view, since it poses the issue of compromise with non-dialectical forms of irrationalism. Still, it is by means of this figural treatment of the genettian «order» of the story that the drama succeeds in the effort to render the fatal position not only of an individual, but of a community whose time is fixed in the hierarchies of a technomorphic society that survives by feeding on forms of oppression.
