Abstract
The sense of the disintegration and dissolution of a previous unity has played a role of great importance in Gogolian narrative, starting from the stories of the Vigils on the farm near Dikan'ka which, behind an apparent carnival-like cheerfulness, there is concealed a yearning nostalgia for a remote world that no longer exists. Gogol's gaze on the world and on what transcends it gradually becomes more and more fragmentary, it disintegrates into a thousand minute details that appear insignificant but whose nature proves to be so strong and disruptive as to make them elements capable of taking on a life of their own: the part becomes the whole, the fragment, unity. In this work we question what happens to what remains, i.e. we investigate the reaction of the original unit to the loss of one of its "pieces" and the fate of the latter. In particular, we analyze the technique adopted by the writer to give voice to the poignant and heartbreaking emotion of loss, to understand the reasons and evaluate the consequences. The corpus under analysis includes two famous works taken from Petersburg Tales: The nose, The coat. In fact, both seem to constitute a promising field for the proposed investigation.
